NEOTROPICAL BIG FIVE

Guanapalo and Altagracia are two wonderful places, full of wildlife and native llanero culture.
With the objective of integrating landscapes and experiences, this tour offers a wider range of places and plans, with the purpose of searching more intensely for those emblematic and striking large animals:

We have our “Neotropical BIG-5” or “The Big 5 of the Neotropics”, in the best African style: The jaguar (the largest feline in America), the giant anteater (the largest anteater species in the world), the anaconda (one of the largest snakes on the planet), the giant otter (the largest otter in existence), and the capybara (the largest and heaviest rodent in the world).

ITINERARY:

 

Starting Point: Alcaraván Airport or Hotel in Yopal.

Finishing Point: Alcaraván Airport or Hotel in Yopal.

Start time – day 1: 7:00h

End time – day 6: 19:00h

 

 

Day 1: We will meet at the airport or place in Yopal previously agreed.
Departure by 4×4 van to the Natural Reserve.
You will be able to tell the driver if you need to stop at the ATM or make any kind of purchase before departure.

 

Arrival at the Reserve is scheduled around 9:30 a.m., where you will immediately begin wildlife viewing and contemplation of the llanero landscape, crossing extensive plains and observing many birds such as herons and savannah owls, as well as herds of capybaras, deer and babillas.
You will arrive around 11:00 a.m. at the lodge where you will be greeted with a cold drink.
You will be assigned your room and have lunch around noon with a beautiful view.

 

Between 2:30 and 3:00 p.m., you will go deep into the reserve in the safari vehicle to search for the most emblematic animals (anteaters, felines, anacondas, among others).
You will travel through different points of the more than 9,000 hectares that make up the Encanto de Guanapalo Reserve and will be able to make stops to walk and explore the forested areas and wetlands.
Of the Big Five or Big Five of the Neotropics, here there is a chance of spotting the anaconda, the giant anteater and of course the capybara.

 

At the end of the afternoon, you will have a toast where you will contemplate the sunset in a unique atmosphere.
You will return to the lodge around 7:00 p.m. to have dinner and share time with the workers of the ranch.
Afterwards, you will rest.

 

Day 2. Sunrise around 5:30 am.
You will have a coffee and a snack before starting with the adventure of a horseback safari, or with the possibility of a canoe ride to watch birds and other species that appear with the first rays of daylight.
At around 9:30 a.m. you will return to the house to have breakfast and then go fishing or make handicrafts.
You will have a typical lunch in front of the immense savannahs and prepare to leave for the Altagracia reserves.
During the afternoon you will travel to your new destination enjoying the fauna that can be seen on the road.
You will arrive at Buenaventura Ecolodge in the evening for dinner and rest.

 

Day 3: At sunrise around 5:30 a.m., coffee and a snack will be available.
You will have the possibility to travel by van or on foot through the different sites of the different reserves that make up Altagracia.
Breakfast will be served at the ecolodge or in the field (optional upon request).
In the afternoon you will have one of the best views of the Altagracia lagoon, enjoying the canoe trip while observing the striking concentrations of birds of various species.
You will have a sunset toast in one of the best settings for photographing the sunset.
You will return to the lodge around 7:00 p.m. for dinner and rest.

 

Day 4: A new morning, a new opportunity for birdwatching and searching for those animals that take advantage of the freshness of the early hours of the day.
Breakfast is scheduled around 7:00 a.m., and then you will head out to explore the different wetlands in the different reserves of Altagracia, where there is a high probability of observing giant otters.
In the afternoon you will walk through extensive forest trails and morichal forests.
Dinner at the ecolodge and rest.

 

Day 5: A new morning, a new opportunity to observe birds and wildlife in the different reserves.
You will have the opportunity to walk, canoe or take a pick-up truck through the different reserves that make up the Altagracia complex.
You will return to the lodge around 7:00 pm to have dinner in front of a campfire, sharing experiences with the Salazar family, hosts of Ecolodge Buenaventura.

 

Day 6: At sunrise around 5:30 a.m., coffee will be available and you will be able to walk the trails of the Ecolodge for bird watching.
Afterwards you will have breakfast at 7 am and return to Yopal.
Lunch on the way at “La Patrona”, a restaurant and museum located in San Luis de Palenque.
Arrival in Yopal around 3:00 pm.

In all the tours, there will be constant communication with the locals, who will be very attentive to report the traces or the observation of the large mammals and reptiles that make up the Neotropical Big Five.
A vehicle will be available at all times for quick transportation in case of sighting reports.

TYPE OF ACCOMMODATION:

Rooms mostly in double accommodation (twin type), private bathroom, solar energy.
(No hot water, no air conditioning).

RECOMMENDATIONS:

  • Wear comfortable, cool, quick-drying clothing, ideally in earth tones that allow for greater camouflage in the natural landscape.
    Pants and long sleeve shirts.
    Cap or hat (you can find an offer of hats in our allied store in Yopal “Sobreros Florentino”).
  • Rubber or waterproof boots (depending on size and availability they can be supplied by us), and comfortable and safe closed shoes.
  • Raincoat and dry bags for equipment.
  • Sun block and insect repellent.
  • Water bottle, thermos or camelback.
  • Sunglasses.
  • Basic personal hygiene items.
  • Flashlight, spare batteries, photography equipment, binoculars.
  • A medium sized assault backpack for use during activities.
  • Traveler’s documents: passport, identity card, civil registry or citizenship card (depending on age and origin), military passbook and medical insurance card.
