BIRDWATCHING

THE MAGIC OF SIGHTING IN THE COLOMBIAN LLANOS

The birds of the Colombian llanos are the most representative group to observe in our tours.

Birdwatching is an unforgettable and wonderful experience for expert birders and birdwatchers alike. Our forests, located in conservation areas around the rivers, are home to a high biodiversity. The birds in flight, the contrast with the twilight hours and the landscapes, favor the photographic and filmic record of many species of great beauty.

On our tours, we have identified key locations for spotting species of interest, such as the Orinoco goose, the red-tailed curassow, jacamars, ibises in various colors, stinkbirds, manakins, sunbitterns, storks, and many more. At Cunaguaro Travel we have expert bilingual birding guides and local nature guides, experts about their region and its biodiversity. We involve the communities and support species conservation programs, birding clubs and AICA (Important Bird Areas) territories.

SEASONS

Birdwatching:

Throughout the year there is the possibility of observing a great diversity of species. Below we tell you a little more about the dynamics that you can find in this region.

Dry Season (December to March):

Rivers and wetlands diminish considerably, water is scarce in the savannas and in many forests, so birds congregate near the bodies of water, often in incredible abundance, such as groups of herons, ducks, shorebirds, among others.
It is also the season of boreal migrants, and the savannah is an important restaurant for the species that migrate through our American continent.

Rainy season (April – November):

The plains, water bodies and wetlands have plenty of water and the birds disperse, however they accentuate their colors in their plumage as it is the breeding season, so many such as herons and ibis congregate to breed, creating a wonderful spectacle of wildlife.
If your preference is birds, the tour can focus on that, daily we can observe around 120 species or more and together find those species of high conservation value.

Ebird – Hotspot: If you want to consult the list of species present in the reserves, we invite you to check these locations in Ebird. Hatos y Tradición – Rancho Llanerazo: RN El Encanto De GuanapaloFinca La Candelilla Altagracia: Altagracia Reserves-Ecolodge Buenaventura. Hato La Aurora: Hato La Aurora-Ecolodge Juan Solito And don’t forget that we also have foothill and mountain ecosystems, so we invite you to write us if you want to combine your observation experience with some of the species typical of these places.
